The Travers - Sabine Circuit is a popular tramp and DOC have a 16 page brochure describing the route presented here and other variations.

Included here is a very worthwhile side trip to Blue Lake and a visit to Lake Angelus, a most picturesque basin, particularly when dusted in snow - which can occur at any time of year.

The circuit begins at St Arnaud and skirts Lake Rotoiti to follow the Travers River to it's source. Climbing to the Travers Saddle opens panoramic views of mountain ranges before plunging back down to the Sabine River Valley.

An 'up and back' side trip to Blue Lake reveals the deep blues and greens of a special and fragile environment.

Back on the main track and down to Lake Rotoroa, this trip climbs to the Angelus Basin before traversing Robert Ridge and the final descent to St Arnaud.

From the bridge over Cupola Creek, the track climbs steeply through to Upper Travers Hut, relenting only infrequently. After a km, a marked side track leads down to Travers Falls.

The track continues to climb to a swing bridge that crosses to the TR and again resumes the climb to a clearing in front of the hut.

Descend from the hut to the clearing and follow the path to the bridge crossing to the TL.

Now follow the pole line to Travers Saddle. An initial climb away from the hut levels of a little before turning towards Mt Travers and climbing the cirque side.

It's an obvious and straight-forward track all the way.

Descending from the pass, the route picks up the obvious tounge of tussock and moves to the TR of the initial gut. Descending further and moving away from the initial gut, the footpad stays close to the bottom of scree and crosses a slight ridge.

The main descent gut comes into view - move to the top of the chute and descend (left, right or on the scree - whatever is easiest) steeply to the treeline. The track descends the final 100m to the East Sabine River then continues a few hundred metres to a fixed bridge that crosses to the TL of the river.

Now under beech, the track descends gently at first, finally a very steep short descent to a little upstream of the East and West branch confluence. A few hundred metres upstream is the West Sabine Hut.

Crossing to the TL at the swingbridge, the track remains close to the river as it heads upstream.

Mostly gently rising, there are two short sharp climbs as the track approaches Blue Lake. Some lengths of boardwalk assist with dry boots and signal that the hut is very close.

From the hut, head downstream, across boardwalk and two steeper sections to a scrubby clearing.

The track continues to descend, remaining close to the river, crossing a couple of slips but mostly remaining under the forest until the swing bridge crossing to the TR, just upstream of the West Sabine Hut.

Cross to the TL on the swing bridge, just upstream of the hut, and follow the well defined track downstream. There are a few clearings suitable for camping but the track, never very far from the river, is mostly under the canopy. There is only one climb of note, shortly before the bridge which crosses to the TR - just a km from Sabine Hut.

At the back of the Sabine Hut, the signposted track begins to climb immetiately. It's just over 1000m before the gradient eases more than a little so settle in for a steady tramp under the beech. The track is well defined to the treeline then poled through to Lake Angelus and the hut.

Once above the trees, the route is very exposed, only occasionally dropping below the ridgeline. Part of the route traverses a large boulder field which would be difficult in light snow and ice.

From the hut and past the toilets, the poled track climbs east to the ridge and continues to the high point and into the saddle, providing a great view back across the Angelus basin.

Follow the pole line along the ridge, sometimes traversing, sometimes on the ridgeline.

From Mt Robert, and the stunning views across St Arnaud, Pinchgut Track (wide and benched) quickly and steeply descends to the carpark.

A longer and less steep track (Paddys) splits from the main route just before Relax Shelter (signposted).
