The Routeburn Great Walk is rightly recognised as world class. Big huts, bridged streams, facilities like gas burners, a Great Walk must be booked many months before the tramp.

The Greenstone Valley, in contrast, has smaller huts, no booking and suits more independent trampers.

Combining the two tramps provides a taste of what NZ has to offer (start on the Routeburn as it is easier to manage booking times)

Transport is readily arranged to and from both trailheads.

At Harris Saddle, there are two emergency shelters on your right. If weather and time permit, a good side trip Conical Hill gives panoramic views.

From Harris Saddle, the track continues south along the Hollyford face, crossing several minor creeks until sharply rounding a spur above lake Mackenzie. A zig zag descent then enters the forest and the lake outlet to arrive at Lake Mackenzie Hut.

Picking up the Greenstone Track, the tramp edges past Lake Howden towards the Greenstone Saddle (not obvious) and continues on a flat grade to the turn-off to the Caples Track. Just beyond is Lake McKellar.

Having walked the length of the lake, McKellar Hut is a short distance beyond, overlooking the top of the Greenstone Valley.

From McKellar Hut, the track crosses to the TL. The side streams are unbridged and quickly rise to dangerous levels after rain. They quickly fall again so be patient and wait until the crossings are safe.

Otherwise, it's an easy track down the valley, mostly in forest until Steele Creek. Having returned to the river flats, the track moves through grass and occasional bog until swinging to the left and returning to the forest.

Finally, the track junction to Greenstone Hut appears and a zig zag descent to a fixed bridge over the Greenstone gorge. A short climb and the hut can be seen across the clearing.

The track leads away from Greenstone Hut, into the bush and descends to the fixed bridge and crosses to the TL of the Greenstone River.

Not shown accurately on most maps, the track climbs steeply, zigging a little to gain the Greenstone Track. Continuing downstream, the track stays under the beech until Slip Flat, a bridge providing a smooth crossing of Slip Stream.

Once across the clearing, the track again enters the beech, crossing another bridged stream and comes to a junction with the Lake Rere track, which descends to the river.

Remaining on the TL, the track heads downstream although leaving the river 30m below. Just before the gate that accesses the parking area and trailhead is a track junction (the swing bridge that can be seen through the trees leads to the Lake Rere loop track).
