Mangaone / Mangame Hut sits 20m west of the main ridge track, although the track to the hut is not marked but is fairly obvious. The hut is locked although it has a nice veranda & the water tank tap is accessible for water.

From the hut continue south along the ridge on a well cut & well marked track. The track drops into a small bush saddle & then climbs up to pt. 706. Not far beyond this point the track drops & swings SW & then W & descends a bush spur all the way to a bush knoll on the 500m contour (NE of Otapukawa Hut).

From this knoll the track swings briefly N & then NW & across a flat section to the 400m contour. From here the track drops W down to the Otapukawa Stream.

From the forks with the Mangone, continue upriver on the 4WD track. The track crosses the river twice at a short gorge - knee deep and easily flooded. The 4WD track ends and a tramping track climbs east onto terraces where Otapukawa Hut is located 100m from the river.

Return to the river from Otapukawa, and head north down the eastern bank. A 4WD track starts here which can be followed. The track crosses the river twice at a short gorge - knee deep and easily flooded. A forks soon follows where the Otamatuna Ridge track is signposted up the spur the the east.

From the junction where the southern Otamatuna Ridge Track meets the Otapukawa Stream, continue heading downstream, crossing the stream as & when required. The stream bed is wide & relatively easy going, albeit hard underfoot compared to the bush track along the Otamatuna Ridge. In 1 hr one arrives at the Tauranga River & the Matahi Valley Road end.

The track south from the saddle is marked by a 'This is not a track' sign. A great, well markd, well cut track follows the ridgeline south, marked with permolat and yellow triangles. Other traplines branch off in place and care is required the stick to the main ridgeline track. Omahura Hut is just visible in a basin to the west of the track just after the 2nd highpoint. A cage-trap was located at the turnoff when I visited, but is was not signposted.

Note: Described in the reverse direction to your journey

From the track junction 100m east of pt. 734 a well travelled track/ trap line runs north along the main ridge. It crosses a minor peak then drops to a saddle before climbing to a 2nd peak after 100m. Here a marked yellow triangle points right 'To Mozens'.
A long steep descent follows east off the highpoint. Marked with yellow triangles the route is clear. Eventually you reach a saddle with a small clearing containing Mozens Hut. This is a staff hut & may be locked but water is available outside.

From the track junction 100m east of pt734, a well-work track/trapline runs south along the main ridge. Countless highpoints and saddle follow, with several traplines branching off the main ridge. Stick to the route marked 'MR' or 'Main Ridge; and you'll remain on the main ridge south. A major track (not on maps) crosses at the saddle north of Oueari.

At the unnamed highpoint between pt818 and pt811 two yellow triangles mark a track junction, signposted (on the yellow traingles) 'To Hut'. A short, gentle descent drops east before swinging north into a small basin where Pakoakoa Hut sits in a clearing. The hut is a staff hut and may be locked or occupied by contractors, but the water tank and picnic table should be accessible.

From Pakoakoa Hut, return briefly west to the main ridge. A good, well traveled track/.trapline runs south along the ridgeline, marked with yellow triangles. Several traplines branch off the main ridge, so take care to reamin on the Main Ridge (MR) route.

At the 2nd highpoint (after 1.5km) the trapline/route intersects the main track from Te Pourewa Hut to Ohane Hut. The track is marked with orange and yellow triangles and the junction is not signposted, but obvious.

From the summit and junction with the main ridge north, a marked, cut DOC track runs south to pt 690 before swinging east and descending to Te Pourewa Hut. 200m before the hut the track drops to a sidestream (ankle deep in normal flows), which must be crossed, climbing the far bank to a low saddle before descending again to the hut. Te Pourewa Hut sits on the bushedge at the start of large scrubby/weedy paddocks - on the track.

From the signposted track junction the track to Koaunui Hut cuts briefly SE before finding the spur and following it east then NE to the river. The track was overgrown in places (2015) but well marked. A long, gentle descent, hitting the river at the forks with the Waiohinekaha Str.

Follow the riverbed downriver 300m on gravel / grassy flats until triangles appear on the eastern bank. A cut marked track cuts off the large bend in the river, heading due north to rejoin the river at Koaunui Hut.

A good marked track climbs east from the forks of the Mangaone and Otapukawa Stream up the spur. A bit of windfall (2015) but good and well marked. The track is nowhere near the line shown on topomaps (see accompanying map).

Swinging north you pass a puzzling 'This is not a track' sign, but the orange triangles and the cut track continue, dropping north to a a low saddle and climbing again.

Mangaone / Mangame Hut is 20m west of the track at the next summit. The track to the hut is not marked but is fairly obvious. The hut is locked but the tap is accessible for water.
