Lake formed on the Kawarau and Clutha Rivers by the Hydroelectric Clyde Dam Construction extending from Clyde and inundating part of Cromwell.
Dunstan lake takes its name from Dunstan Ranges located nearby. The ranges were named by J T Thomson, reconnaissance surveyor in Otago is the 1850's. It is possible that J T Thomson named the Dunstan Ranges after the birthplace of Duns Scotus, a renowned 13th Century scholar after whom Duns Academy, where Thomson attended, was named.
