Shown on Captain Thomas' sketch map of Canterbury from 1849, Lake Ellismere is named after Lord Ellismere, promoter of the Canterbury Association, 1849-50. The Māori name is "Waihora" meaning "wide waters" or "spreading waters", and was named by Rakaihautu.
