The descent to Stoney Creek from Monument Saddle is not recommended by Moir's, but a viable route does exist, along with multiple opportunities to get bluffed if you stray from it. The initial descent was steep and I was glad to have the ice-axe as an option to arrest any fals on slippery snow-tussock.
From the pass you need to sidle right (I did so as high as possible near the pass height) and get right of the scar shown at the start of the red line on the photo. From here a simple descent follows, compounded only by large tussock, to the yellow basin visible just below. Cross the basin, climb onto the knob and follow the narrow central ridge down. Several bluffs must be circumvented - mainly by sidling right. Finally you hit the beech forest on the last knob, and good but steep goat trails drop the last 20m to the creek below. Do not be tempted to drop early into this right-hand creek as it bluffs out to waterfalls upstream of the last knob.
