A gravel vehicle track leaves the highway opposite Klondyke shelter. Relative safe car parking (CP) at the "no vehicles past this point" sign, 1.5km off the main road. Lots of good camping options. Very cold in winter.
This is the most used option for starting trips up the Waimakariri or Crow valleys, but almost always involves a river crossing in the first 300m.
