An old animal study hide built in 1974 to study chamois in the area.

This is a 2 bunk bivvy adapted for its purpose with slide-open slit windows, shutters and a high bench below each. There is a small water tank (battered to near destruction by kea) and a short-drop (shovel provided) toilet. The 2 bunks have no mattresses and there is no fire. The hut is seldom visited - going 5 years at one point between the last chamois survey and the first visit (Honara and Frank) with no visitors. It is a tough place to get to, but the views of the ranges opposite are wonderful, as is the history, isolation and basic functionality of the place.

3 routes exist up from Basin Creek - up the chute (creek) below the hut. Up the avalanche path 1km east or from Chamois Creek via pt 1647. An old marked track also heads down from the biv, but becomes lost lower down.
