The start of the track up the Pohongina River.

From the South, take Pohongina Valley Road from Ashurst, turning right 500m after Murphy's Irish Bar along Pohingina Valley East road. Fork right at Totora Reserve, remaining on Pohongina Valley Road East. Signposted gateway 1.5km north along the Pohongina Valley Road from DOC Pohongina Field Base.

From the north turn off SH1 at Mangaweka, towards Rangawahia. Turn left up Parapara Road just before Rangiwahia. Follow the asphalt sharp right down Main South Road towards Apiti. 1km north of Apiti turn left down Pohongina Valley East Road. Signposted track start is 1km south of Piripiri Road.

Initial land is private, so permission may be required for dogs, etc. Alternative public access is up river from Pohingina River bridge 2.5km SW.
