From Styx Hut, follow the benched pack-track upriver. A crossing is required at the hut, which could pose problems after heavy rain, but is normally easy.

Continuing upriver, the track crosses a low boggy saddle before dropping gently beyond. A signposted track junction 1km beyond marks the junction with the track up/down the Arahura.

From the track junction 1km east of the Styx Saddle, the benched pack-track climbs gently and heads over the low but boggy tussock saddle into the Styx, and on to Grassy Flats Hut. A crossing of the Styx River is required at the hut, but this is small and would only pose difficulties after heavy rain.
