From Scamper Torrent Hut, drop to the creek, and follow the river downstream for 300m to the end of flats. A roughly marked track climbs the tussock face on the true left, cutting 20m back upstream before heading straight p through scrub to the tussock tops above. The track is marked with permolat but grasses soon overgrow it so it can be slow.

Once in the tussock above the scrub, head due north over pt1125, occasional warratahs providing reassurance, but little guidance. A good, marked rack starts at the top of the spur east of Labyrinth Creek. The descent is very steep, 900m of unrelenting gradient, but is well marked and in reasonable condition (2016). The track exits into Labyrinth Creek 50m above the confluence with the Waitara.

Kiwi Flat Hut is 1.5km up the Waitara, reached by following the southern riverbank upstream, crossing the Whirling Water, and then picking up the short track / route to the Hut on flats on the eastern side of Whirling Water.
