A sparsely poled route runs down the Cameron River from Cameron Hut.

Circling round moraine behind the hut the route crosses the small creek to the south then sidles down to the main river flats, Occasional cairns / poles reassure you you're on the right path - the ground trail is faint. The ground trail and markers disappear across the first flats. As the valley narrows and gorges look for a rough trail angling up the tussock face on the true right - little more than a game trail. This is the next section of sidle track - climbing onto terraces where it is marked by occasional warratahs but almost invisible on the ground in low scrub & tussock. The route drops back down to river flats below the gorge.

A small stream joins from the SW here, leading up to a low saddle into the South Branch Ashburton River and Top hut
