The lower 2km of Chamois Creek are gorges and travel is slow and in the riverbed with multiple crossings. After that the valley open out a little with smalls scrubby flats and / or a broader shingle riverbed providing moderately easy travel as far as the main forks below Moonlight & Roses Hut. The track marked in maps on the western valleyside does not appear to exist.

The first 3km of Chamois Creek below the forks are moderate going on the rocky riverbed or flats of slow scrub / tall grass & thistle. However, the valley gorges out for the last 2km to Timaru River and progress is slower int he river with multiple river crossings - generally ankle-knee deep.
