From Caroline Creek Biv the poled tramping track heads downriver, crossing the Waiau twice to reach Waiau Hut - 3km downriver from Carioline.

The poled tramping track continues north from Waiau Hut, following first the western bank before crossing to the east. A further crossing follows back to the west bank to reach the end of open valley flats where beech forest begins and the small Caroline Creek Biv is tucked away in beech forest.
