From the hut, head due north to the bushedge (avoiding private land) and then follow the bushedge round to pick up the 4wd track headed east. The track can be followed in public land all the way to the gate/track junction above the Stegning / Waiau forks (opposite Tin Jug Hut). At this point everythinbg south of Steyning is private but the north bank is public.

Note: Described in the reverse direction to your journey

Glenhope Station signage suggests that the route to Steyning route crosses private land - but by sticking to the route described here it is possible to reach Steyning Hut without leaving public conservation land.

From the track junction north of Steyning Stream (opposite the private Tin Jug Hut) follow the well-maintained 4WD track west along terraces 60m above Steyning Stream. Afther 1km the track crosses the creek a few times before climbing 20m or so to sidle the southen bank. A gate is reached indicating that private property lies ahead. The 30m or so of clearing between you and the hut is private, but by following the bushedge and approaching the hut from the north, this can be avoided. The hut itself lies on DOC land.
