The valley below Redcliff hut is very scrubby - but good deer trails sidle up the escarpment face of the southern branch for 150m before crossing and climbing onto open terraces on the opposite side. The 1st broad terrce can be crossed in tussock but above that the scrub returns. Again, good deer trails follow the eastern bank upriver, sometime beside the creek, sometimes sidling the face. Scrub ends where shown on the map.

A straight forward but steep spur climbs the north side of the creek draining Spence Peak, ending at the saddle between Spence and pt1483. Sections are very steep and an ice-axe was handy.
