A well-maintained track leads from the carpark at the end of the Urchin access road up above the bushline, over Urchin and up over the ridge running along the western side of the Waipakihi Valley. The track continues along this ridge to meet up with the Umukarikari Range but take the signposted fork leading down into the valley, where the marked track ends Lots of good camping areas on the flats immediately across on the true right from the track end.
