Cross the slight saddle SSW to the southern (named) summit of Maungamahue, then drop SSW, following the main ridgeline as it descends. After a wide saddle the ridgelione climbs again towards pt1635. You can either climb this, and descend again on the southern side, or sidle it on the eastern face at the 1500m contour to intercept the track up from Triangle Hut.

From the top of the spur / route which descends to Triangle Hut, cut due north across the eastern face of pt1635 until you hit the ridge heading NNE towards Mangamahue. Follow the broad ridgeline over a saddle and up a further 160m to the first Maungamahue summit. From the summit, cut NNE a further 200m over a slight saddle to reach the northern of the two summits.

From the northern summit, a narrow ridgeline drops east and heads towards Te Hekenga, whilst another broader ridge runs NW towards Kelly Knight / Pourangaki huts.
