This is one of several routes between Weka Flat (Waterfall Hut) and the Mangaweka summit or points further south on the Hawkes Bay Ridge. The other routes are Iron Peg Creek and Pinnacle Creek.
From Waterfall Hut walk down the Kawhatau river bed to Iron Peg Creek and up this creek to the major tributary entering on your right - Trig Creek. Travel in the open bed of Trig Creek is like a steady staircase of small boulders, shingle, windfall trees and maybe old hard snow (avalanche debris, which we encountered, hinting at some wild winter conditions). The tussock section is steep but the whole route is very direct.
