From the Crow turnoff, the poled route follows the ridgelione NW for a bit over a kilometer, dropping gently to the bushedge. Once in the bush a good marked, cut track drops down the spur to the Kawhatau River. Steep at first and very steep lower down.
The river can be crossed in the water, or in the cage. The cage is hard going, so be prepared.
On the far side the track climbs the far bank, heading slightly upriver, before emerging onto the road just inside the park boundary. Kawhatau Base hut (locked, bookable) is 100 m west up the road.
