From the Bull Mount turnoff, follow the track ENE through a series of clearings and scrub. There are a few small tarns along here and camping is possible if there's been recent rainfall.

At Bull Mound the track swings WSW and starts to drop into mature bush. The descent is steep and continuous, but the track marked and cut (2013). On reaching the valley floor, ford the river. This is much smaller here than at Tutuwai and is ok (knee deep and narrow) except for after heavy rain.

On the eastern bank, a signpost marks the junction with the Cone Hut - Tutawai Hut track. Cone Hut is 200m upriver along the track.
