From the car park use a style to cross the fence and follow the markers across farmland. The markers lead down to the edge of stony flood plains opposite the mouth of the Young River. Under normal conditions you ford the Young River here. The water is knee deep and swift. In 2009 there was a good ankle deep braid across the river several hundred metres upstream, opposite Brady Creek. If the river is uncrossable here your other options are to head up the road to the Blue Pools and come down the Blue-Young Link Track, or return to Makarora and pay for a jet boat to drop you off at the Young mouth. DOC has run an office in Makarora for years who had good up to date information about the state of the river, but in July 2015 they announced that the office is closing. Nearest DOC office is now Wanaka.
