A public (legal) forestry road drops east from the saddle at the end of the Forsters Track, exiting the forestry after 4km and continuing through farmland another 3km to the Onamalutu Reserve, where there is a public campground.

From the Onamalutu Reserve a gravel road continues west up the valley. After about 3km this enters forestry and becomes a standard forestry track: ok in high-clearance 2WD. Zigzagging it climbs to the saddle where the start of the Forsters Hut track is signposted. Parking is limited.
