Good 4WD track down the valley floor. Frequent crossings – ankle deep. Turnoff to Black Spur hut is passed after 1km.

2.5km before the Clarence the 4WD track starts to leave the river and climb the northern face (to head over to Quail Flat). A signpost and information kiosk at this point mark the junction, with a riverbed route continuing down river and another 4WD track climbing the southern face towards Palmer Hut.
