An old 4WD track, now abandoned, leads up the valley floor from Shamrock Hut. The good track ends after 1km, but a vague track continues on the opposite river bank (east) crossing back 1km before Hagens Hut. It is also possible to continue up the western valleyside on grass and scrubby flats.

Hagens Hut is tucked in the bush. A short 4WD track climbs to the hut from the river.

A faint 4WD track leads downriver from Hagens, crossing after 1km to the eastern bank (crossing point is poled). The route crosses back 3km downstream and the track becomes an old formed roadbed. Shamrock Hut is 1.5km further down, on the bushedge 300m from the track. A poled route leads to the hut.

If the river is up it is possibkle to ttravel all the way on the eastern bank on grass and scrubby flats.
