An obvious, rough 4WD track drops into the head of Clear Stream from pt1857 on the main Hawkdon Range. The track is on the boundary of DOC land - sometimes cutting into private land. After a large zigzag the track reaches Clear Stream on the DOC boundary. A small rundown 2-bunk hut sits here.

From the small hut in upper Clear Stream, a rough 4WD track climbs west up the DOC/private boundary to the summit of the Hawkdon Range. Land north of the track is private, and the track cuts into private land in places.
