River route in normal flows from Pourangaki Hut to Kelly Knight Hut. From Pourangaki Hut, head down to swingbridge on marked track. Once over bridge, follow track to the grassy point where the side stream intercepts. Enter the river and travel approx 6km downstream - the first part seems to take ages because of the large bends in the river. Mostly easy going, although some slippery boulders and 30ish crossings with only a couple of deeper pools. River gets slightly gorged and faster by the swingbridge - exit on the true right and there is a bit of a scramble up the bank to join the track. Cross the swingbridge and from there it's less than 5 minutes to the hut.
River can easily become impassable after steady rain, but good alternative route when tops are too windy
