A rough 4WD track runs up the western bank of the usually dry Makerikeri RIver. The riverbed become a gravel quarry after about 1km, and the Rangiora Leigh campground is visible on the opposite bank. Assuming there's no water in the river you can walk across the dry bed and in the back gate of the campground.

From the Rangiora Leigh campground, exit onto the riverbed via the back gate and follow wither the dry riverbed or the 4WD track on it;s western bank downriver. After about 1km you will intersect the main 4WD track running up the north bank of the Ashley.
