From Te Panaa Hut, head east along the bushedge and pick up triangles on the far side - a standard tramping track dropping to the river. You follow the river upstream for 200-300m before picking up triangles climbing the eastern valleyside to meet broad and obvious 6 foot track at a signposted junction above.
The river is small and loos as if it would only pose difficulties in extreme conditions.
This section is wrongly shown on the new topo50 maps which show no river section..
