Cross the river to the south bank at/near the Mid Styx turnoff from the Styx River track. This crossing was knee deep and moderately fast in low flows and could easily become impassable.

Head down the south bank, past the small sidecreek 50-100m downstream. Pick up the marked track downstream of the sidecreek and follow it south up a steep spur onto terraces above. The track drops to a small creek and climbs again to an unmarked junction on the same contour as the hut. A newly reopened track (2017) continues up the spur to tops above, whilst the track to the hut cuts west across the face to Mid Styx Hut, 200m away. The turnoff is missed by many parties.

From Mid Styx Hut, follow the track east for 200m to the track junction, and follow the track down the spur to the Styx River. Head 50-100m upstream, crossing where it is easy and find the short cut track on the northern bank leading to the signposted junction with the Styx Pack Track.
