A good marked, cut tramping track follows the ridgeline north from the Apiti Track towards Longview Hut (2007). The track starts cut through low bush and scrub, later emerging onto tussock ridgelines. After nearly 3km pt1164 is passed where there is (was?) a signposted turnoff to Makaretu Hut (caution: when I visited Makaretu in 2014 this northern access to Makaretu appeared to have been abandoned by DOC).

From pt1164 the Longview-Apiti track continues south along the ridgeline - vegetation tending increasingly to bush/scrub. The track is well maintained: cut and marked. The signposted track junction with the Apiti Track is about 3km south of pt1164.
