the hut book details the work of James Broadbent in cutting and marking this route (not a DOC route). It is well marked and initially follows the TR of the stream (often very close to the flow - difficult in high flows) up to the 3rd major side creek on the TR. Here it climbs steeply away from the stream, initially through a large windfall, on a narrowing ridge. Well above the treeline, the saddle comes into view. A lip below the saddle provides some good shelter from high wind.
