A reasonable cut track runs down the true left of the Haupiri from Elizabeth Hut to the Cone Creek forks. For the most part the track is cut along flats beside the river, though occasional sections you are left to find your own way down the shingle river flats. The track does not cross the river but some lower sections would be underwater in flood conditions.

Some rough hot pools are located on the track 20m before Cone Creek is reached.

Cone creek can carry a lot of water when in flood, but the crossing location is flat and quite gentle and was crossable after a night of moderate rain. There are no better crossing locations of Cone Creek for several km upstream.

The junction with the track up Cone Creek is located on the north bank of Cone Creek.
