Below the Moerangi track turnoff, the route down the Mangamate is replaced by a rough track which generally sidles low on the valleysides or on the riverbed. Frequent river crossings are required, but unlike the route upstream, extended travel in the river is no longer necessary,

The river is knee deep in normal flows and 3-5m wide, and could become impassible after heavy rain.

The track ends on the western side of the bridge which carries the Central Whirinaki cycleway over Mangamate Stream, and is marked by a signpost.
