An old 4wd track follows the rear of flat 568 before making a sidling climb to The Terrace. It intersects the St James Cycleway at the base of the climb to Charlies Saddle.

An old 4WD track cuts off the St James Cycleway at the base of the descend from Charlies Saddle, following the stream marked on maps. The track makes a sidling descent to the Waiau flats to the south (marked pt568) on maps. These flats provide the last reasonable crossing of the Waiau in normal flows.
