From Thompson, head North, dropping with the track until the road is met. Follow the road until the junction to the (25 minutes) campground, then turn right. Follow the open ridge which is grassy and in places difficult to see where the track should be going. As the grass runs out, the track enters the bush. The track here is not well marked - look out for trees with red paint on them that mark the way into the bush.
Follow the track down to the stream. Cross the stream, heading upstream 20 or so metres (there is a large DOC orange triangle) to climb out and onto the junction.

Drop down into the creek and cross it heading downstream 20 or so metres to climb out at the large DOC orange triangle.
Follow the track as it sidles up the toe of the spur, then climbs out onto grassland. Stay on the spur as it climbs until the junction, Stay on the road and follow it up until a track climbs up to the right (1.25 hours). About 5 minutes more on the track will see you at the top.
