Travelling down river on the true right, a foot trail emerges through tall grass on the edge of the river bank. This is well marked by a combination of regular DOC triangle markers, large DOC triangle markers, and orange ribbon. The foot trail leads to a recently cleared track, which enters the bush and climbs steadily towards Rangitane Road. Not long into the climb, a small clearing about 20m above the river offers a possible campsite. As this track is not benched it may become harder to follow if not regularly cleared, however the track markers are generously placed. This track improves access to Kawhatau Base, bypassing a section of the Kawhatau River from the Rangitane Road Bridge.
