A 4WD track climbs the spur from the DOC boundary to 1100m where an old boundary fence is reached. Cross the fence and continue up the spur - now on an unmarked / untracked ridgeline. A series of steeper tussock steps take you over pt1270, pt1279 and up to Kakanui Peak.
Note that access the DOC boundary either requires permission from Longlands Station to use their track, or requires a scrub-bash up the Shag River marginal strip from the highway to the DOC boundary.
