Drop 100m north off Kakanui Peak and pick up the 4wd track running north. Follow this briefly to pt1375 where it starts to drop off the ridgeline. Leave the 4wd track and follow the ridgeline NE to the saddle with Mt Evelyn, following the fenceline. Climb NE from the saddle to intersect the 4WD track from pt1240 where it enters DOC land on the fenceline. Follow the 4wd track to the summit of Mt Evelyn. This route remains in crown land so long as you are west of the fenceline.

It is possible to sidle from the saddle into the creek 200m to the north-west if you need water.

Note that Crumb Hut and land west of Mt Evelyn peak is private - Dome Hills Station.
