The DOC track starts at the gate at the end of the road. Approx 100m down the track is a large slip which can be tricky to negotiate. Past this continue on the track to the river. There is the odd Y standard making the route initially as you head upstream. Approx 1 km up the river (after crossing 1-3 times) you leave the river climbing up through the bush on the true left. This part of the track is not well marked and can be difficult to find but you should cross an old fence in the bush then come out on the farm boundary where there is stile to get over the fence. There are plenty of animal tracks climbing through here so at worst head up (bush bash) this short piece and you will come to the farm boundary. You do not need to cross into the farm as either side you climb steeply up the fence-line (300m elevation gain in 800m). Follow this to the top where there is another stile on the fence crossing into the bush and DOC track to Hinerua Hut. This is an alternative to walking up to where Government Spur climbs up out of the river.
