A long, unexciting walk up the flats of the Hopkins valley from the end of the council-maintained road at Huxley Lodge to the first hut, Monument Hut. This is along a legal, but infrequently maintained 4WD track, and so vehicular access is permitted along this section, but conditions can often block it to 2- and over 4WD traffic. You can also cycle this section, if you prefer.
