A roughly marked track continues north up the north branch of the South Temple from South Temple Hut. The track starts on the true right and becomes more defined once shingle flats are left behind. After about 2km the track crosses to the true left. The crossing was possible after heavy rain - but could be blocked in extreme conditions. It then climbs onto the eastern face, where it continues most of the way to the forks at the valley head basin. Crossing the tributary draining gunsight pass, the track climbs between the 2 forks, before swinging NW towards the large brown-watered tarn.
