Heading upstream from Te Puia Hut, the track soon reaches a swingbridge where a signposted track turns south to Makino Hut. The track is a basic tramping track and is steep and crosses clay-pan faces which will be slippery after rain. It is a steep 500m climb in 1.5km to the junction with the Makino Hut track, at the top of the face. The hut is 500m west along the track from the junction on the boundary between the shaded beech forest of the tops and the hot exposed manuka scrub to the west..
