From Twain Hut, return to the river via the track west. Cross the river which is ankle-knee deep and easy crossing in normal flows (could flood). Opposite, track markers mark the start of the track climbing WSW towards Te Whakaumu highpoint. The track runs up the spur to the first unnamed highpoint. Lower down, the track is well marked, but by the summit you have little more than possum traps to follow, as marking drops off. A faint ground trail exists. The track junction is at the summit, though those heading to Saddle Hut can avoid the last of the climb and sidle the eastern face to the saddle beyond.
