From Mick, head west along the ridgeline. As you emerge into scrubby clearings you'll pick up an old cut track, but it is very overgrown and not much use. A 500m scrub-bash follows before you finally reach good bush and swing ENE off the main ridgeline towards pt882. Good going follows through mature bush, occasionally marked as there is a monitor line down the spur. Follow the twisting spur as it descends to pt620, taking care not to be led down false side-spurs. At pt620 swing east and descend to the forks, avoiding the gorge upriver. The river is knee deep and easy crossing in normal conditions, but would easily become impassable. Island Forks hut is just up the northern fork (East Waetewaewae River) on the eastern bank.
