From the Neill Forks turnoff a poorly marked, infrequently cut track runs SSW down Cone Ridge to reach Cone highpoint. Through the bush the track is easy to lose but the bush is open and the ridge easy to follow. As things narrow further south the track becomes better defined and can be followed all the way to the bushedge 500m before cone summit. A faint trail with little or no marking follows the western side of the ridge past dry tarns to reach a small conical mound and a signpost - the junction with the Waiohine-Hector tarck.
