Follow the Makarora river up to eventually reach the rocky slopes at the valley head. A small gorge east of Point 777 is more easily avoided by following unnamed Kaye Creek to large boggy flats north of Point 777 and then descending through bush to grassy flats on the Makarora north of the gorge. Pleasant flats lead all the way up to just below the 900m contour where another gorge has to be rock hopped up. The top valley gives views of Mt Brewster.
