From Cone Hut, head briefly down the track to the river. A few meters down the river a signpost points west over the creek to the Bull Mound Track. The river must be forded, but is much smaller here than at Tutuwai and is ok (knee deep and narrow) except for after heavy rain.
On the opposite bank, find the DOC triangles and the start of the track climbing steeply to Bull Mound. The gradient is and and constant through good bush on a cut, marked track. Eventually you reach the tops and the track becomes flat and the bush turns to scrub and clearings. Swinging WSW at Bull Mound, the track follows the ridgeline through clearings and scrub to the signposted track junction north of Omega. There are a few small tarns along here and camping is possible if there's been recent rainfall.
