From the A Frame Clark Hut follow the track into the bush as it leads through a low saddle at the top of the Grebe Valley. The track is good as far as the descent northwest of Point 452 where there was quite a steep descent down an active slip with a lot of erosion. At the base of the hill continue down through bush to reach the Monowai Hut on the edge of the lake. The hut is frequented by boatloads of hunters and fishermen and has been trashed by drunken idiots. In 2012 it was full of bullet holes, rubbish and mice. You might want to camp further to the east on the beach if you can stand the sand flies.
