Start from Marble Hill campground and enjoy a days walk to a less visited hut. The beech forest in particular is magnificent and the bird-life prolific. Some prior experience tramping off tracks is a good idea. The 'tracks' are not maintained by DOC and several river crossings very quickly become impassable with rain.
Access to the hut via the head of the valley, over the low saddle from cannibal gorge hut, is surprisingly straight forward but has no track and no official markers. More experienced parties will also enjoy crossing or traversing the Freyburg Range.
Basic facility DOC campground. Toilets, water, some sheltering trees, lots of sandflies.

Ford the Maruia river opposite or up from the campsite. Follow the 4wd track up the TL of Alfred Stream, find the start of the track 60m past the high point crossing into the Pel Stream catchment.

An unofficial semi maintained track. There's a sign at the turn off from the 4wd road, just after the highpoint. Old markers and ground trail follow along a high terrace and eventually down to Glichrist creek/Pell stream junction.
There are numerous gold mining remains on the terrace - water races and shafts - all well hidden in the bush.

Follow Pell Stream, crossing as necessary. It is possible to scramble along the TL bank, but its steep and slow. Pick up the restart of the track after the larger unnamed side creek. If the stream bed suddenly becomes hopelessly gorged - you've missed the track start.

Altitude: 596m to 742m. Gain: 154m. Loss: 94m . Gradient: 9 deg (Moderate)

the second and key section of track. Pell Stream looks impassable below this high sidle. Both ends are well marked (2015).

Follow Pell Stream up to the hut. Again there is a marked route on the TL but at normal or low flow following Pell Stream works just as well.
Basic Hut/bivvy. A less visited 4 bunk S70 well maintained by DOC.
